US Appeals Court Overturns Yuga Labs’ $9M Trademark Lawsuit Judgment
A US appeals court has overturned a $9 million judgment in favor of Yuga Labs, the creator of the Bored APE Yacht Club NFT collection. The Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals ruled that Yuga Labs failed to sufficiently prove claims of trademark infringement and cybersquatting against artist Ryder Ripps and Jeremy Cahen. The case has been sent back to the district court for further review.
Ripps and Cahen launched the RR/BAYC collection in 2022, replicating Yuga Labs' NFTs while claiming their work was satirical criticism. Yuga Labs initially won the case in 2023, but the appeals court found flaws in the trademark infringement arguments. The outcome could influence future NFT copyright disputes.
